22 Jun 2010 - Renault Clio (2001-06) Review

Sporty looks and economical engines have made this supermini a great choice in the past but can it compete in todays market?

The clio first hit our streets back in the early nineties and has stayed true to its origins. A revamp in 98 brought us a more rounded shape and then a facelift version graced the scene in 2001 offering a more sporty look and feel.

At first glance the clio still looks fresh and seems to hold its own against comparable rivals. On the road it is light and nimble and handles better than expected. Economy is good and the engines respond well.

On closer inspection the clio's flaws become apparant. The cabin seems rather dull and plastics can look cheap compared with rivals, rear legroom is not the most generous and electrics can become a cause for concern.

Overall the clio is reliable, cheap, and fun to own and drive but comes second best to more modern rivals.
