HPI was formed in the UK way back in the past - just before World War 2 - in 1938, before computers were available and telephones were scarce.
All vehicle enquiries were carried out on paper and took many days to complete, so if you wanted to know if your Austin Seven or Churchill tank had been damaged in an accident you would carry out an HPI check and several days later you would have the answer.
So it is not surprising that over the next 58 years the term 'HPI Check' became a common phrase within the Motor Industry for vehicle checking. There was no competition and no other way existed to check on a vehicle.
This situation remained until 1996 when Car Data Check entered the 'car-checking' industry but even so, all vehicle checks were referred to as an HPI check and this is still the case.
